Sunday 6th January 2019
Rockets Jan Fondo
Sunday 6th January 2019 is the date for the second edition of Jan Fondo, it’s like a Gran Fondo but a little less Grand, it’s also in January.
If you’ve ridden some of our events before, maybe Around the Block, Hell of the West or Trans Kernow then you’ll know we like to focus on fun. Our events are not races in disguise, they’re about creating good memories, pushing yourself a bit but mainly they’re just a good excuse to get out of the house and ride your bike!
Jan Fondo is exactly that, it’s a ride from Rockets & Rascals in the heart of the Barbican to the other side of Dartmoor. Total ride should be about 70 miles. In 2018 we rode to Okehampton but this year we're heading to Bovey Tracey.
We’re not going to be putting up signs on lamp posts, in fact we’re not putting up any signs or even telling you which route to take. Some riders will head directly there and back, others will try to accrue as many miles as their legs will carry them. We’re also not going to tell you what bike to ride, it’s not a sportive, you can ride a mountain bike off road, you can ride your gravel bike over the moors or you can put your skin suit on and ride a TT bike.
We want you to run whatever bike you have, get out and have an adventure, take some cool photos and share your stories back at Rockets & Rascals afterwards.
It’s also a great way to burn off some Christmas chub.
Riding in January can be bitterly hard so please do not enter this event unless you are comfortable with riding 70miles, i.e you have done it LOTS of times before.
If you make your day over 100miles you get an extra mug of beer.
Entry is £20 and here’s what you get:
- Your very own Jan Fondo riders board and entry to the first ever event
- A checkpoint with something to warm your cockles
- A finishers mug back at Rockets & Rascals to be filled with Rockets coffee or Sharps Wolf Rock beer.
- Our Rockets van is there as back up in case it all goes wrong.
As with all of our events there's an exclusive Strava club, in there you can ask questions and also see who is doing what in the run up to the event. To join the club send a request after you've entered:
Any other questions then pop into the store or drop us a message.
Timings will be as follows:
Riders can set off from 0800
All riders need to be back at Rockets by 16:00 at the latest.
Checkpoint at Bovey Tracey will be open from 11 until 13:00 so you need to plan your route accordingly. Riders arriving at 13:00 that look beaten may be encouraged to get a lift home.
Our events are covered under our insurance with CyclingUK but we always recommend all riders to get their own 3rd party insurance by joining either British Cycling or CyclingUK.
